Easter Monday and A trip to the Lion Park

Not too far from where Bakkies and Daleen live, is a privately owned lion and nature reserve which we went to visit on Easter Monday.

There was a definite nip in the air early in the morning which did not bode well for the rest of the week and our few...and I mean few...warm items of clothing that we took with us. I was not thinking 'cold' when packing for Johan and I as it was just the middle of April and not time for winter warmers yet... At least I had the presence of mind to pack one pullover, a pair of tracksuit pants and a couple of long sleeve tops for Johan in case he got wet whilst fishing, which were 're-cycled a few times in the following days....

Anyway we made our way along the dirt roads to the reserve and had a leisurely amble looking at all the different birds and animals they have there. There were a number of empty spaces which it seems are being cleaned out and upgraded. Those that were in use, were quite nicely maintained and the animals appeared content and well fed.

The lions are the main attraction of the reserve and have been tamed by a couple of people working there who have had them since they were cubs. There is a public feeding time on a Wednesday...and I think also public holidays, where the lions are given custard - yes custard...you can be part of it if you pay to do so, otherwise you can watch from afar through the fence.  We missed the feeding time as we had finished looking round, enjoyed a double thick milk shake but were still too early for them...however I'm sure there may be a 'next time' when we will be able to...
